One of the most lake-dense counties in the Midwest — more than 100 named lakes across 554 square miles. Warsaw, the county seat, sits at the crossroads of several glacially carved lakes.
The Lilly Center at Grace College sampled 16 county lakes in 2025 and publishes the results in its annual ‘Beneath the Surface’ report. In 2026 it received a $10 million Lilly Endowment grant to launch Lake Rx.
The Watershed Foundation and active lake associations fund weed treatment, shoreline buffers and runoff projects — organized stewardship that is rare in Indiana, and public enough for buyers to verify.
About 40 miles to Fort Wayne and 45 to South Bend; roughly two hours to Indianapolis, two and a half to Chicago. U.S. 30 and S.R. 15 keep commutes and getaways easy.
